Wakki Spring Smallies and Stick Worms

It's been a wacky spring here in PA weather-wise!  Early April snows and constant fluctuations in rivers have kept us guessing for certain.  Spring is in full swing according to the calendar, but don't think the smallies know it yet!  They are still in a cold water mode.  When this is the case, we stick to our winter patterns of throwing smaller profile tubes, our own Erie Darter cold water jigs and Chris Krinkle Worms as well as suspending jerkbaits.  I always teach, "let the smallies dictate what to throw".

Soon, spring will actually be realized by the bass.  Water temps will reach that 50 degree "happy place" and the bass will begin moving about and using current much more for feeding.  They will begin cruising shallow flats and eddies in search of adequate spawning habitat.  Femlaes are heavy with eggs and some of our largest bass of the year come in the next few weeks.  If water remaines stained from the rains, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and even tubes are great choices.  However, if we deal with clear water conditions, Delaware and Susquehanna River bass become stingy with what they will eat.   Few things trigger more strikes from clear water-weary smallies  on clear, sunny days or post cold front days than a stick worm.

One of our BWA TV sponsors, Vinnerbaits, has created their Wakki Stikks.  They have "Vinsert Technology", which means they, unlike any other stick worm, have placed an "o-ring", or plastic insert, in the center of the lure, then poured the plastic around the insert.  This is really ingenious for wacky-rigging, in that literally, the lure can be used for many multiple hook-ups without tearing or falling off your hook.  Its the cat's meow for "wakki" rigging!
